Turning It Up to 11: Comprehensive Rules Update 1.3.2
Refining the Pace of Battle in Wonders of the First
Every round should matter.
Every decision should matter.
And every player should feel like they still have a chance to turn the tide of battle until the very end.
Today, we are releasing Version 1.3.2 of the Comprehensive Rules.
This update contains a single rules change:
A round now ends after 11 consecutive passes by a single player instead of 21.
You can review the full details in:
- 403.4
- 404.5.1
of the updated Comprehensive Rules document. Which you can find here
Wonders of the First: Official Rules
Why This Change Was Made
From the beginning, this rule was designed to enable deep, explosive late-round gameplay. We wanted players to have the opportunity to engineer dramatic comeback victories, especially during the pivotal moments of Round 7.
That philosophy has not changed.
What has changed is our understanding of where the sweet spot truly is.
After extensive testing, we found that gameplay beyond 11 unanswered turns increasingly created non-interactive patterns that did not reflect how Wonders of the First was designed to be played. Instead of creating tension, excessively long chains often led to one-sided “solitaire” gameplay with limited opportunities for meaningful counterplay.
That is not the experience we want the game to create.
We still want explosive turns.
We still want comeback victories.
We still want players to feel like they can fight until the very end.
But we also want the game to remain interactive, strategic, and engaging for both players throughout all seven rounds.
Testing showed that 11 unanswered turns preserves the possibility for epic late-game swings while significantly improving pacing and reducing gameplay patterns that many players found frustrating.
Our Design Philosophy
As always, our preferred method of balancing the game remains:
- Card design
- DBS tuning
- Metagame refinement
We do not make structural rules changes lightly. However, after extensive testing and community feedback, we believe this update creates a healthier and more enjoyable play experience overall.
The result is a game that remains:
- Fast enough to stay engaging
- Deep enough to remain strategic
- Explosive enough to create unforgettable moments
A Note from Brian Tinsman
“Today we’re releasing version 1.3.2 of the Wonders of the First Comprehensive Rules. The only rule change is that the round ends after 11 consecutive passes by a single player, not 21.
We still want players to be able to come from behind on Round 7, but games that need more than 11 unanswered turns for someone to win are outliers in general.
We think you’ll like the change.
Cheers,
Brian Tinsman”
The battlefield evolves.
The metagame evolves.
And Wonders of the First will continue evolving alongside its players.
Thank you to everyone testing, competing, deckbuilding, and helping shape the future of the game.
